Mastering the art of cocktail shaking is a crucial skill in bartending. This course delves into the three main styles of cocktail shakers used worldwide: the versatile three-piece Cobbler shaker, the efficient two-piece Boston shaker, and the stylish Parisian shaker. Each offers distinct advantages for mixing drinks and creating exceptional cocktails.
Throughout this course, you'll explore the unique features of each shaker, learning when and how to use them effectively to elevate your bartending techniques and impress your guests.
In this course, you will learn how to use bar tools to make cocktails quickly and efficiently, focussing on the build, stir, shake, swizzle and throw methods. These techniques mix, chill, dilute and aerate a beverage so you can offer guests cocktails that are the right temperature, texture and intensity.
This course is designed to help bartenders develop the skills needed to make cocktails, including how to:
- Build cocktails in their serving vessel
- Stir cocktails with good technique
- Shake cocktails using a tin-on-tin or Boston cocktail shaker
- Swizzle a crushed ice cocktail
- Throw a cocktail between two cocktail shaker tins.
A swizzled cocktail is a type of mixed drink that is prepared by swirling or stirring the ingredients in a drink with a swizzle stick or a bar spoon. Swizzled cocktails are refreshing and perfect for warm weather due to their crushed ice and vibrant flavours.
In this course, we’ll explore everything you need to know about building the perfect swizzled cocktail.
Explore the reasons, timing, and methods involved in the art of throwing cocktails, and gain a deeper understanding of how this technique can impact the overall drinking experience.
This course will equip you with the essential knowledge of prioritising safety, using appropriate ingredients and tools, and applying the throwing technique while blazing a cocktail, enabling you to create impressive drinks for your guests.
A craft cocktail program requires much preparation. From juicing fresh citrus to making syrups, cordials and shrubs, a lot happens behind the scenes. As a bartender, you must problem solve using basic maths to prepare house-made ingredients.
This course, Cocktail Ingredient Preparation, is an introduction to craft cocktail making and covers:
- Units of measurement in cooking
- Measurement conversions and how to scale recipes up or down to meet demand
- How to make cocktail ingredients such as syrups, cordials, infusions, shrubs, sodas and fat-washed spirits
- How to batch cocktails and cocktail ingredients, including the tools and tricks for batching and labelling.
Cocktails in the same family share similar ingredients, are made using the same technique and are served in the same glassware. Guests tend to have a preference for cocktails of a specific family, using a preferred ingredient, or served in a particular type of glass, so cocktail families are a useful frame of reference for recommending cocktails to guests.
This course, Basic Cocktail Families, covers the following:
- Seven basic cocktail families, including stirred, sour, highball, crushed ice, carbonated wine and dairy cocktails, and punches
- The flavour profile of each of the seven families
- The ingredients, glassware, and garnish commonly used in each of the seven families
- Tips for speaking about and recommending cocktails to guests.
