Today, we raise our glasses to the timeless elegance of the martini, a cocktail with a rich history and enduring charm.
Though widely contested, the martini's origins are often linked to Jerry Thomas, the legendary "father of American mixology." Known for his innovative 19th-century bartending, Thomas is believed to have created the Martinez cocktail, a key predecessor to the modern martini we love today.
Thomas included a recipe for the Martinez in his 1887 edition of The Bartender's Guide, one of the first cocktail books:
Martinez Cocktail
(Use small bar-glass)
- Take 1 dash of Boker’s bitters.
- 2 dashes of Maraschino.
- 1 pony of old Tom gin.
- 1 wine-glass of Vermouth
- 2 small lumps of ice
*Shake up thoroughly, and strain into a large cocktail glass. Put a quarter of a slice of lemon in the glass and serve. If the guest prefers it very sweet add two dashes of gum syrup.
With its blend of gin, vermouth, and a hint of sweetness, the Martinez cocktail laid the foundation for the sophisticated martini, showing the evolution of this classic drink over time.
