Celebrating International Tennessee Whiskey Day

Published: 21 May 2024

Today, on May 21st, we celebrate International Tennessee Whiskey Day, a day dedicated to honouring the rich heritage, tradition, and craftsmanship of Tennessee whiskey. This special day was officially declared by the Tennessee General Assembly in 2021. Historically, the date signifies the state's repeal of the ban on manufacturing alcoholic beverages in Tennessee on 21 May 1937.

The Origins of Tennessee Whiskey
The story of Tennessee whiskey begins in the late 18th century, when enterprising settlers discovered the perfect ingredients for crafting high-quality spirits: fertile land, abundant water, and a favourable climate. Early distilleries were often small, family-run operations, where whiskey-making was an extension of life on the farm.

One of the most significant milestones arrived in 1866 with the establishment of Jack Daniel's in Lynchburg, Tennessee – the nation's oldest registered distillery. Jack Daniel's, renowned for its signature charcoal mellowing process, set the standard for what would become a globally recognised style of whiskey.

The Unique Character of Tennessee Whiskey
What truly sets Tennessee whiskey apart is the charcoal mellowing process, also known as the Lincoln County Process. This additional step smoothens the whiskey's character, resulting in a distinct flavour profile that is both robust and mellow. By law, Tennessee whiskey must be produced in Tennessee, made with at least 51% corn, and aged in new charred oak barrels.

The Economic and Cultural Impact
Today, Tennessee whiskey is more than just a drink; it is a vital part of the state's culture and economy. The whiskey industry in Tennessee generates millions of dollars in tax revenue, attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, and provides employment to many residents. Distilleries such as Jack Daniel's, George Dickel, and a growing number of craft distilleries continue to thrive, contributing to the rich tapestry of Tennessee's cultural heritage.
