Course information

Learning all the different types of cocktails may feel so daunting. But the good news is that there's actually a system that groups these cocktails and makes them much easier to learn! Each cocktail is categorised into one of seven different families:

  1. Stirred cocktails
  2. Sour cocktails
  3. Highballs, Bucks and Collins
  4. Cobblers, juleps and swizzles
  5. Fizzy cocktails
  6. Egg and cream cocktails
  7. Punches.

Cocktail families are grouped by similarities in ingredients, preparation, glassware and garnish.

This course will deconstruct each family, helping you to learn and recall recipes without consulting a recipe book; recommend cocktails to guests and curate a dynamic beverage menu. The goal of this course is to help you make better cocktails. Here we study flavour, balance, texture and presentation as elements of a cocktail, and we move further to explore the tools, techniques, glassware and garnishes involved in making each of these.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced bartender, there's lots to learn. Let's get started!
